THE “OCCULT” AND “MAGIC” ARE MOST LIKELY NOT WHAT YOU IMAGINE THEY ARE

NOTE: this is all my own personal understanding from my personal experience and study. I would not be at all surprised if your thoughts differed from mine, in fact, I expect that to be the case.

Many authors attempt to convey their concept of what the “occult” is, and what “magic” entails.  Unfortunately, many of them do not possess the great number of years of study in the Western Mysteries, to qualify them to write intelligently on the subject (of course, they do it anyway).  In addition to that, many are writing from a strong religious bias, which prevents them from making any real or substantial contribution to the understanding of “that which cannot be understood”.  The final “kicker” to all this, is that the masses of readers who are ignorant of such things, readily take the misguided writings of such authors as truth, with not even a meager attempt at verification of the veracity of such writings.  No understanding of real magic, or any real knowledge of the occult can come through research of the myriads of unenlightened expositions on the subject.  It is only through many years of concentrated effort, and through the guidance of some reputable “Mystery School” or wise teacher (there are many who claim to be wise, but do not have real wisdom), that even a superficial appreciation of the enigmatic symbolism begins to dawn upon the aspirant.

I wish to do my part to dispel (dis-spell) the misinformation that is rampantly promulgated as truth in this area.

The simplest description i can come up with, of what the occult (and magic, sort of) IS, is the journey to “consciously rediscover the divine spark which already exists, and has always existed, within each and every person – AND thing, in the Universe”.

Occult – “hidden”, secret – refers to the “oral tradition” which was historically transmitted from teacher to student within the religious priesthood, alongside the “written tradition”, which presented divine wisdom in a somewhat obscured and concealed way, for more general consumption. Without clearly revealing specific information which was considered “dangerous” for the common, uneducated, illiterate, and ignorant person to know, they (whoever “they” are, in any time, context, or society) supposedly “protected” their subjects from this “dangerous” knowledge (sound familiar?). Most likely, they were protecting their own (asses and) “authority” over the ruled, subjugated, and enslaved masses. With these texts, some basic “laws” for behavior, and punishments, were presented in whatever “sacred” book existed in any given authoritarian “religion”, or government. The goal of such was (is) to control, contain, and subjugate the masses to the will of the <insert your own self-proclaimed authority here> government or “church” and its political hierarchy (the names change, but the hegemony, sovereignty, or supremacy remain the same). These “authorities” used it as a method to keep their subjects pacified and minimally “happy” (and it works exceptionally well). The “powers that be” did not want the common folk to rebel when they took exception to being enslaved to the “elite”, or bent to their “will”. This situation has existed throughout all of known history, and still exists today. There is always someone who wants to be “boss”, and “fear” of the unknown, or the nonexistent, or of the threatening “other”, is one of many psychological tools used to establish and perpetuate this assumed “authority”. <insert audible sigh here>. Many times, this “tool” takes the form of a sacred religious text.  Don’t you know, if it is “sacred”, how dare anyone question it or take exception to the direct word of (some contrived, fictional) god!

This most “dangerous” information was partially this: the knowledge that each individual was created equal to any other. Each person, and thing, in the Universe is a unique and special divine “Spark” of the Whole, of the Unity. No one “thing”, or “being”, is better, or more valuable than any other. ALL is sacred. Also, each person is given the SAME (spiritual) potentialities and powers as any other. Also, each person is free to do anything of which they can conceive and desire, without any consequences in any kind of “afterlife”. There is no “hell” after death, it is a contrived fiction born in the minds of the power-obsessed. The only consequences for our actions, are those imposed by others, or by “society”, in THIS life, in the physical realm. This is (part of) the occult knowledge which is considered to be the most “dangerous” (possibly) to each individual; if they knew or even thought they could do anything without eternal consequence. They might choose to do things which carry the risk of death or maiming to themselves , or to others, or, more importantly, to the “governing” authorities, or to society itself. I am not saying that this is not a serious concern for those who present this information to others – in fact it IS. There have been periods throughout history where this knowledge was studied widely, and generally accepted. In fact, there was a time when you were not considered properly “educated” without this knowledge, especially in the “elite” circles of society (especially during the early Renaissance ). However, there have also been times where the “elite” considered this knowledge dangerous to their rulership. As a result, for example, the “church” waged a campaign to stamp it out, and branded it as “evil” (except, of course, for themselves). Remember the crusades, and the inquisition? (I refuse to capitalize such abominations)

This is why certain things were kept “hidden”. The fact is, that there are some who choose to follow the left-hand path of chaos, destruction, and domination by force and will (mostly the “elite”), but the majority (I sincerely hope) who are knowledgeable in the “occult” look within to find the power to change those things about themselves which need improvement, or which are standing in the way of further spiritual growth. Such people understand that we are ALL part of the SAME being, and that to harm any part of that whole, is to harm oneself. They learn the responsibility of having this greater understanding (“noblesse oblige” among the truly “blessed”), and take their responsibility to the Whole seriously. Most learn to value and love all of creation, developing great tolerance and compassion towards all. This greater understanding probably exists naturally to the child who has not yet been indoctrinated, but the same understanding is otherwise not a natural part of the “little” self, or ego, but needs to be relearned and re-experienced. This knowledge is dangerous in the hands of those who are foolish, seek to enslave and subjugate, or who are not mentally or, more importantly, emotionally entirely stable. Those on the left-hand path either: do not realize the responsibility which naturally accompanies this greater knowledge, or actively reject and denounce that responsibility. They make a conscious decision to reject responsibility to others, and to the Whole (and, in turn, reject that responsibility towards THEMSELVES as well, since they are part of that Whole – whether they realise it, or not).

So, you can see the possible danger of everyone knowing and realizing the simple truth that all are equal, that all are free (within the limits and bounds of the physical laws, like gravity) to think, plan, say, or do, anything they want, without fear of punishment in the hereafter. ALSO, the knowledge that there is NO authority separating any individual from direct unity with God, or the Whole of the Universe. There is just the individual, and then God, with no “earthly” authority in between. (Matthew 23:9,King James Version (KJV): “And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven). The “mediator” between God and humanity, as described in the Bible (1 Timothy 2:5), contrary to surface appearances, is a “spiritual” reality, which does not actually “separate”, but rather provides the BRIDGE, or spiritual mechanism, for any aspirant to attain the conscious experience of unity with the Whole. It is a means of connection, rather than separation.

The occult knowledge also includes the idea that we can each reclaim, and experience personally, oneness with that Unity. The fact is, that all things ARE constantly in a state of unity with the ALL, but because of individuation (individualization), we have lost, forgotten, or simply cannot perceive, the CONSCIOUS knowledge and experience of that unity. The process of taking on a physical form, and the total immersion in the overwhelming sensory experience, which is physical life on the physical plane of existence, hides our conscious connection with the Divine within the overwhelming sensory “noise” of life. The goal of both the mystic, and the occultist alike, is to regain that CONSCIOUS experience and knowledge of the oneness with the Divine, which each and every “thing” in the Universe already, and continually, possesses.

Yet another piece of the occult knowledge, is also the very basis of every major religion of humanity. That is the full knowledge of BOTH the Immanence AND Transcendence of the Divine. God lives both “through” and “within”, each and every part of creation, and is unified with ALL of that creation – AND, is also One with all that does NOT exist within creation. We can think of God as being Unified with Spirit and Soul… and with No-thing (that which does NOT exist), and with infinity, eternity, immortality etc. This thought includes ALL the potentialities and possibilities which COULD exist, but maybe, do not exist in “reality” (whatever that is, who knows!?). The ideas of any and all possible “alternate” universes, exist within the Mind of God, whether, or not, they actually physically exist in some reality parallel to our own. The bottom line IS: that God is everything that exists (signified by the Divine name “Ehyeh”, or “Eheieh”, in the Bible), AND everything which does NOT exist, except as possibility, except in thought. I will throw in here the concept that everything which we THINK exists, is also nothing but thought in the Mind of God.  Physical existence only “appears” to be substantial, because we THINK of it that way. It is all based on our mind’s interpretation of sensory impressions. There is nothing which is NOT God, and there is nothing that can ever possibly exist outside of God, including nothingness itself! There is no possible idea or reality which can exist, except WITHIN the Mind (and Being) of God. How’s that for a mind-blowing supposition. I will leave you to work out all of the possible implications.

The preceding includes a good bit of the basis of the occult doctrine. It is “said” that an adept, one who has achieved conscious unity with the Divine, has complete power and control over all the natural forces of the physical Universe. The only individual who is capable of reaching this level, is, by definition, also one who realizes, and fully, faithfully accepts, the huge responsibility which accompanies this level of Oneness with the ALL (and the No-thing), and the power that derives from this conscious Unity. No person of “evil” intent (“evil” and “good” are only relative to OUR perceived physical state of being, but have no meaning from the perspective of the Unity) is capable of ever attaining to this adept level, because its attainment requires serious acquiescence to the Divine Will, and complete acceptance of, the great responsibility of, wielding  this power in perfect agreement with the Will of the Divine. Only an aspirant of “pure” heart can attain it, because of the very nature of what is required for such a quest to be successful. It cannot be a quest for selfish ends, but rather a release of all personal goals, in pursuit of “God’s Will” (whatever that may entail).

That about sums up the essence of the “occult”. There is nothing inherently “evil” about the occult, it is simply “knowledge” of certain Truths regarding God, humanity, and the Universe. That knowledge itself is neutral: it is simply knowledge. What makes it “good” or “evil”, to our relative “human”, conscious thought , is the purpose to which each person directs that knowledge, and the motivations of any such individual. The only way to correctly judge what is good, or what is evil, is by whether or not it is in accordance with the Divine Will. This seems paradoxical to the doctrine that the Will of God is ALWAYS done no matter what, and that it is impossible for anyone to do anything which is NOT within the Divine Will. If this is so, then that Will must also include, by definition, all of the seemingly “evil” (to us) things that are done. This concept takes a very long time, and lots of serious meditation, to begin to grasp (or maybe I was just a slow learner). Keep in mind that the whole idea of “good and evil” is only a concept which WE apply at a human, “individual” level of being. On the cosmic scale of the Unity, there is no good or evil, everything simply exists, “it is what it is” – period. There does not exist any authority outside of God, let alone ABOVE God, which could render ANY kind of judgement on God, or “Its” thoughts, “Its words”, or “Its” deeds. Nothing can exist above, or outside of the totality of God, who, to us, as physical beings immersed in “reality” or “life”, is totally unknowable, and inconceivable – while we remain embodied or incarnate. Therefore, there is no human characteristic, either good, or bad, or any other, which can be placed upon, or applied to, the Transcendent. I like the saying “it’s all good” as well as the next person, but that statement, even though it attempts to illustrate the idea just presented, is, in actuality, not entirely true. This impossible idea of placing any judgement on God, whether by ourselves, or by any authority which is outside or separate from God (the likes of which cannot exist), is reflected in various theologies. It is the reason Christian theologians say that God is only good, that no evil can exist in God. However, their theology is somewhat faulty. It is just as false to say that God is “good”, as to say the opposite. God simply “IS”, and even that concept only approximates, but can never quite fully express, the reality of the Divine Essence. Everything that exists, is a Divine piece, or “Spark” of God. It is impossible for anything to exist which is NOT an integral part of God. That is the meaning conveyed by the Divine name Ehyeh (or Eheieh) in the Bible.

“and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what am I to tell them?” 14 God said to Moshe, “Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh [I am/will be what I am/will be],” and added, “Here is what to say to the people of Isra’el: ‘Ehyeh [I Am or I Will Be] has sent me to you.’” 15 God said further to Moshe, “Say this to the people of Isra’el: ‘Yud-Heh-Vav-Heh [Adonai], the God of your fathers, the God of Avraham, the God of Yitz’chak and the God of Ya‘akov, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever; this is how I am to be remembered generation after generation. Exodus 3:13-15, Complete Jewish Bible (CJB).

Those who study the occult teachings, both the “light” and the “dark”, are, by definition, spiritual people who at least believe in some form of a God, even if their conception is of a totally impersonal One. It would not make sense to make the effort to get to know an entity, if you do not believe that entity exists. Even those who are seeking to know that force for the purpose of gaining power, at least believe that such a force exists. In my experience, the majority of those who study the occult Wisdom are gentle, loving, dedicated, moral, and compassionate souls who are seeking only to reach greater depths of understanding in, and in experience of, God. They are simply seeking to better their own character, and better the world around them, by periodically testing each of their beliefs in light of their whole personal experience and knowledge.  It is a necessary trait of such individuals to continually learn, and to never stop seeking greater spiritual understanding.  Even when that quest comes up against formidable barriers, such as the seeming paradox of “predestination versus free-will”, From personal experience, I say that if one continues to pursue understanding and wisdom in all things, and continues to “push through” the seemingly insurmountable barriers of understanding which reveal themselves in the pursuit of God, one will eventually gain the prize of multiple “revelations”, in the form of knowledge, or direct experience of the “Unknowable”.

Never stop striving for perfection, regardless of the supposed pointlessness of attempting to apprehend the difficult paradoxes intrinsic to spiritual mastery of the mysteries of Life Eternal!  If you continue on, despite trials and tribulations, you will eventually reach your goal.  Just maybe not in THIS incarnation.

Levels of Delusion

Two levels of delusion all humans share in common, whether aware of it or not, care or not, or believe it or not, get in the way of a relationship to, or identity with the Divine Being.  This Being is generally known as “God”, and by many other names. Before I get into the what these levels of delusion are, I have a short preface to that discussion.

1 Corinthians 13:12 American Standard Version (ASV)

12 For now we see in a mirror, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know fully even as also I was fully known.

First off, the understanding of the concept of the “devil” in many modern religions, and the minds of many humans, is incorrect.  The “devil” is not a “personality” as many theologians postulate (I will not apologize for this statement, those who believe this are simply wrong, because I say so…lol).  The devil, or Satan, is an idea or concept which is synonymous with the “veil”, the “fall”, original sin, delusion, or the idea of somehow being separate from God. In short, “it” is anything, real or imagined, that gets in the way of direct, conscious apprehension and experience of total oneness, and unity with the Divine.  This “devil” is the “thing” which deceives minds, and senses (the liar, the great deceiver), and is the very thing within all human minds which they are to constantly strive to overcome (according to the various scriptures),  If a person sees this “Satan” as a separate personality, somehow externally able to tempt and force people to do bad things, rather than an idea within their own minds, they are already lost in hopeless error of any proper understanding of many “scriptures” of many world religions.  This misunderstanding leads to all kinds of religious factions, silly rules, division, arguments, fights, and even murder, crusades, and jihads. Just a little delusion goes a long way in corrupting minds.

With that said…on to the heart of the matter.

People who are non-religious, or nominally religious, may have no idea that God exists at all.  Many nominally religious perceive God as a being which is totally separate from themselves, completely outside themselves, may even take no notice of their inconsequential lives.  They have no direct experience of that Being, outside of the intellectual belief that that being exists, or MAY exist. This is the most basic level of delusion (to be overcome).

The more mystically inclined people may apprehend that there exists a constant, direct connection with the Godhead.  They realize intellectually, if not in any actual, conscious experience, that there is always this connection, whether they feel, or perceive it, or not.  No matter the perceived circumstances, God is always with them, and completely connected to them (God is in me, and I am in God).  This is (possibly) the second level of delusion (to be overcome).

The problem is with the concept of “connection”.  The idea of connection “implies” that there are TWO things which are connected.  Rather than a “connection”, there is an actual “identity” with God.  People, the Universe, and God are all One, a Divine Unity, the “same”.  No matter what people perceive with their senses, there does not exist any actual separation, division or difference between humans, the physical universe, and the Divine Being.  All are One.

Overcome these two levels of delusion, and one will have (according to the various scriptures and teachings) the direct, conscious apprehension of the Divine.  (I personally perceive this intellectually, imperfectly, and look forward to the actual, direct experience, hopefully in this incarnation).

There are many words related to, and imperfectly describing, this experience: bliss, heaven (on earth), the new Jerusalem, kingdom come, awakening, ecstasy, happiness, joy, paradise (lost to the “fall”), peace, serenity, tranquility, oblivion, immortality, life everlasting, the pearly gates, eternity, nirvana, Eden, Elysium (Elysian Fields), enlightenment, Shangri-la, the promised land, glory, rapture, nothingness, Zion, peace (on earth), the “void”, Abraham’s bosom, happy hunting ground, communion, eternal rest, the great unknown, the abyss, satori, waters of oblivion, utopia, samadhi, nothingness…

Understanding that this epiphany or revelation is the key concept, and goal, of most of the major religions of the world, past and present – goes a long way in allowing one to properly understand many of the religious texts in their originally intended context.  Many misunderstandings arise from the incorrect apprehension of the various “scriptures”.  Look at the “mess” of religions we have today (especially so called right-wing, radical).  And yet, at the heart of them ALL, is this same, identical goal and idea of experiencing directly, and consciously, Oneness with God (whatever you call It).

These are the two levels of delusion that I personally perceive separate us from true Unity.  Quite possibly you have a different view (I could pretty safely bet on it).  That is just as it should be.  I hope this little blog is helpful to someone out there, no matter your religion, or lack thereof.

TRUTH

TRUTH

So, a seeker of Truth you claim to be…

Silly child, why seek for what you already possess?

The Truth is in the greatest Whole,

But you close your eyes and refuse to see,

The Truth is in the dimensionless Center within,

But you hold fingers to your ears and refuse to hear,

You say, “How can a mere mortal mind comprehend the Fullness?”,

But You ARE the Fullness of Truth,

You cannot grasp It, but must open to the Experience.

—–

You have appointed for yourself a day of Understanding,

In that Day, you will open your eyes,

And it will be your Day of Judgement,

For you will know that You did it all to yourself.

You have appointed for yourself a day of Wisdom,

In that Day, you will remove the fingers from your ears,

And it will be your undoing,

As you hear the Celestial choirs.

For you will say, “Why did I wait so long; I knew It the whole time”,

And you shall know the absolute Joy you sought to find,

And True Love shall be your eternal Bliss.

A Message to Fundamentalist Christian Conservative Racist Sexist Homophobic Murderous Bastards

There has, most definitely, been, and still IS, a problem of racism (and other ‘isms) which pervades every facet of our society. I had not realized just how much racism and hate still existed until all the publicized police shootings, and associated rallies by hate groups, such as the KKK. I am beginning to see that it is much greater than the “news media” has been portraying to us for a very long time. It is one thing for citizens to privately harbor racist (and other hateful) beliefs, and keep their opinions to themselves.   It is another thing when it affects others negatively, such as causing the deaths of innocent citizens. It is unfortunate that some people continue to hate their own brothers and sisters, BUT in order to have freedom of thought and speech for all, they must be allowed to hold whatever beliefs, even hateful ones, they choose to hold. Other than educating younger generations to be tolerant, and see all people equally, I know of no way to change the racist (and other hateful) views of those who hold them. People are simply going to believe whatever the fuck they choose to believe.

Racism in our societies institutions, however, particularly our police forces at this time, IS something that can be changed, desperately needs to change, and needs to change yesterday!

I do not personally have many specific answers, but I support equality, and I support change. There ARE people and politicians who DO have some answers. What I want to address here today, is an issue whose history and current reality I can understand, but whose ideological basis, and the blind adherence to this basis is something I simply cannot fathom. I am specifically referring to the fundamentalist Christian religion, out of which so many of our racist, sexist, and anti-LGBT conservative politicians have come, and there still remain. How can the fundamentalist Christian religion have failed so miserably at teaching the true messages of Christ, especially when the main principles of LOVE are presented in the Bible SO literally, with no room for misinterpretation? This I cannot fathom.

Must I again remind Christians of the Greatest of the laws of God, those of loving the Lord your God with all your heart and soul, and loving your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-40, Mark 12:29-31)? If you were loving your Black and LGBT brothers and sisters as though they were YOU, you could not possibly spew the hateful thoughts that self-identified, fundamentalist Christian conservative politicians have been publically vomiting on the nation. If that is not clear enough for you, how about Jesus’ command to love even your enemies (Matthew 5:43-48, Luke 6:27-36)? How much more literal and clear do you need it to be to see just how hatefully wrong your thought processes have become?! As you judge these fellow human beings, you shall equally be judged, and that judgment shall be every bit as harsh as your own judgments (Matthew 7:1-5, Luke 6:37-38). If you actually consider Blacks, LGBT folks, and others to be your enemies, then how is it loving towards them to murder them in cold blood? How can you continue to support the terrible crimes that are occurring, and actually support the murder of unarmed citizens by beatings and shootings, and the choking out of life, even in some cases where they are already confined to jail, or are offering NO resistance other than to beg for their lives? How ANY Christian could possibly think that just because the Bible (Old Testament) condemns certain things, that it is OK to lynch, beat, and otherwise murder human beings who you are commanded to love, and whose “sin” (according to those “Old” Testament scriptures) is one of those which was condemned? How does the condemnation of certain ACTS give you the “New” Testament right to execute PEOPLE, “human beings”, whose very inner nature, created By God, just happens to associate them with “sins” condemned by the Old Testament? Blacks are never condemned in the Bible, but that does not stop the supposedly “Christian” white supremacists from killing them, or supporting others, like racist police officers, to do the killing. I just don’t get how people brought up on the Bible in Christian churches can justify such beliefs and actions.  They are most definitely “sick” and in dire need of a “doctor” (Mark 2:17).

There are SO many theological reasons why this hate-filled interpretation is FULL of error and evil. I simply do not have the time, or energy to address them in detail. It is a great error to attempt to interpret MOST of the scriptures “literally” because their writers never meant for them to be taken that way at all! Jesus was a reformer. He made every attempt to CHANGE peoples’ views of the “Law” to something new, better, and more loving, and yet balance those attempts with wisdom and care not to incur the wrath of the religious authorities too much until the appointed time for his public execution by those same religious authorities! We have the same situation today, where fundamentalist Christian authorities are using “strict” interpretation to denounce certain categories of humans, and are totally ignoring the “spirit of the law” that Jesus tried his best to convey in his short lifetime.  They CLAIM to be Christians, but their “frothing at the mouth” behaviors to see human beings killed is more in line with Satanic doctrines!  They practice the exact opposite of what they preach.

They are also ignoring the fact that Paul wrote about some things being sinful for one person, but not for another by using the example of meat sacrificed to idols (1 Corinthians 10:27-29).  The lesson being taught is one of Christian “freedom” which also applies to other (Old Testament) laws as well.  As the planet continues to evolve (by God’s design, and scientific support), and human spiritual understanding evolves to higher levels, the letter of the Law actually changes with the times, cultures and with societies (Oh, I’m goin’ to get a lot of flack for that one). If our civil authorities (which Jesus “clearly” stated we are to OBEY, 1 Peter 2:13-17, Matthew 22:17-21, Mark 12:14-17) have decided that Blacks are equal to Whites, and LGBT people are free to get married, women are equal to men, etc…then their decisions should have the weight of God’s authority and scripture to Christians. It is always permitted to disagree, and attempt to change our leaders’ views, but while the rulings stand, we are commanded to respect and obey them (unless they are SO obviously wrong that one has to resort to civil disobedience to keep from doing what is evil, like killing innocent people). So, you supposedly Christian conservatives…quit harming and killing anyone!!!!! Stop ALL evil wars (and they ALL are evil), fix the police system, and quit using your false religious views from harming ANY human being!

If you truly had any fricken’ idea what and who God really IS, you would instantly understand how evil and wrong your interpretations of scripture ARE!! Grow up and join the rest of enlightened humanity whose views are putting your barbaric and ancient ones to shame. It should not be this hard for you to understand that killing ANY human being is wrong, and NOT God’s plan, ever since Jesus instituted mercy, love, and forgiveness over the stark letter of the outdated Old Testament Law. Those laws were there, FOR THE TIME AND CULTURE FOR WHICH THEY WERE WRITTEN, to teach some sense of right and wrong to THAT society.  The principle of Christian freedom teaches us that once the Law is written on our hearts, there is no longer a need for the written law (that’s taught in both the Old and New Testament, Jeremiah 31:31-34, Hebrews 10:14-18), and the NEW law is the law of Love, not murder.

How much more plainly and literally could the scriptures, and my post, be? STOP YOUR EVIL HATRED OF HUMANS! Give it up! It violates the will of God, and you are guilty of SIN. You are the ones that need to learn your lessons in Spirituality and Godliness, because the progressive Christian elements have got it right, and are trying to show you the way. But you, just like the ancient Jews, are stubborn and stiff-necked, and will probably take your hate with you to your graves. It is a good thing that your idea of hell is a fairy tale, concocted by “political humans” to control the masses by fear, and was never taught by God. Otherwise, if I still believed the lies, I would tell you all to go to hell! But I say this with love for you (believe it, or not), and the hope that, in your lifetime, you will come to know the great love of your Father. Once that happens, all hatred of others will become the most repugnant thing to you, and you will realize your error, and join with all the Christians who have continued to grow, evolve, and progress towards the perfection taught by Paul the Apostle (Philippians 1:6). You will leave your “Dark Ages” mentality, and join the human society of the 21st century.

This all gives a clear example of the relationship between conservative and reactionary thinking. Stop holding on to the violent PAST. The new age of Aquarian Peace and Unity is dawning upon us. Open your eyes and ears to its light and music!!!

DAY TWO OF THE 3 DAYS, 3 QUOTES CHALLENGE

This will be a shorter post….I promise (I think, maybe, or not)!

}8*)-|–<

The quote for today:

“Every particular in nature, a leaf, a drop, a crystal, a moment of time is related to the whole, and partakes of the perfection of the whole.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

The “Holographic Universe” theory is a (not so) recent scientific and mathematical theory which may actually apply literally to our Universe.  Basically, that every piece of the whole carries within it, an image or shadow of the whole itself.  Now obviously a leaf from a maple tree cannot possibly contain the entire universe, BUT it can contain a fuzzy or hazy view of the whole.  The idea is that if you take bigger and bigger pieces, the pattern of the whole contained within a bigger piece (like a solar system) becomes a clearer and more accurate picture of the whole.  Finally, if you take the entire Universe as the piece you are considering, then it certainly contains a perfect picture of the whole Universe!  Each small part of the Universe carries within it a portion of the perfection of God.  See how I just snuck (sneaked?) God into the discussion?

My view of God, as I have written in other posts, is a pseudo-pantheistic view.  In other words, I believe that the Universe IS a part of, and made from the very substance of, God.  God’s actual body, or the perfect “reflection” of God, made FROM God’s own substance.  But in addition, I also believe that part of God exists outside of the Universe as well.  Basically (ya, I like this word and use it a lot), God is everything that exists, AND everything else that does not.  The Unity of Everything and No-thing (Nothing).  Reminds me of the “Something, Everything” album by Todd Rundgren.

So yes, I definitely resonate with Ralph’s idea that “Every particular in nature…is related to the whole, and partakes of the perfection of the whole”.  Just substitute “God” for “the whole”, and you have a fair statement of what I personally believe.

If you want to know God better, one avenue to take is to look inside yourself.  Indeed, we are a direct reflection of God (made in the image of God, literally, Genesis 1:27).  We carry God within ourselves, and we are made of God’s substance. God lives within us, and we exist within God.

  1. That which is below is like that which is above & that which is above is like that which is below to do the miracles of one only thing
  2. And as all things have been & arose from one by the mediation of one: so all things have their birth from this one thing by adaptation.

The Emerald Tablet of Hermes, Newton’s translation, Wikipedia.

Another method of approaching the understanding of God, is to meditate upon small objects, seeking to find what EACH reveals about God.  As you meditate on more and more objects, a picture of God is built up in your mind, and progressively becomes clearer and more complete.  Of course, this is a lifetime (or multiple lifetime’s) occupation, but no one said it was easy (insert huge smiley face).

That’s all folks, for day two of the challenge.

Unity

I grew up Christian, and followed it all my life.  I still WANT to call myself Christian, but I am hesitant because, over the years, I have come to believe some things which SOME, but not all, Christian denominations would consider heresy.  So, I usually call myself a Christian Mystic, or a Cabalist, or a Qabalist (C = Christian, Q = Jewish, Kabbalist, Ya, it IS confusing).  But let’s back up a bit.

I was raised as a very liberal Christian in the United Church of Christ, throughout my childhood.  In my college years through my 14 years of marriage, I experimented with MANY different churches from right-wing fundamentalist groups, Episcopal, and Lutheran denominations, through independent, Spirit-filled non-denominational churches, to Pentecostal.  After that, there were questions remaining which were not satisfied by the standard Christian answers.  Examples include the ubiquitous “predestination vs. free will”, the trouble with the existence of evil in the world, and especially how one could possibly be separated from a God who is omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (all-knowing), and omnipresent (everywhere present) (all of these are standard beliefs of Christian Orthodoxy).

I started studying the Qabalah, which led me to a “Western Mystery School” which I later joined.  During that time I also occasionally attended Unity Church of Christianity, which I immediately loved, and felt at home there, for reasons I did not fully understand at the time.  One very noticeable difference is Unity’s use of “Mother-Father God” in its services, equally acknowledging both the masculine and feminine aspects of God, which are greatly downplayed in the “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit” trinity.  I learned an alternative way to interpret Biblical scriptures, which led me to answers to many of my nagging religious beliefs.  The written scripture can be interpreted in about as many ways as there are people who read them, and plenty of people have twisted them to their own selfish ends.  For millennia, there has been an “oral tradition” passed down from teacher to student, along with the written scriptures; past down even up to today.  Jesus taught this tradition to his disciples, in secret, and spoke in parables publically, for the rest.  This oral tradition is the one provided in the Western Mystery Schools and provides the ancient wisdom which enables the student to more correctly understand and interpret the Bible, and other scriptures.  Anyway, that covers the last 15 years of my life.

Throughout this time, I had acquired a slightly altered set of beliefs about “Life, the Universe, and Everything”, although my beliefs regarding Jesus as the Christ, the Messiah, have stayed pretty much the same.  So, because of this, I became somewhat hesitant to call myself “Christian”, only because I did not want to mislead anyone (I am very honest like that).  An example of one of the “sticky” areas of theology would be my chosen belief in some form of pantheism, which is considered heresy by many Christian denominations.  More about that shortly.

Recently, I have visited the main website for Unity Church of Christianity, or just “Unity”.  I read about their theological beliefs, and they made a lot of sense to me, and surprisingly and cheerfully matched very nicely the set of beliefs that I deemed most likely to be true.  It is not my intention to discuss all my beliefs in this short post, but I will use something close to pantheism as one example.  I will hopefully be discussing other beliefs which I hold, in future posts.  I will share with you two short selections from Unity’s FAQ and related pages.  I will also include the web addresses of these selections if you would like to read more about it.

What are Unity’s basic teachings?

We encourage you to explore and apply Unity teachings based on your own spiritual understanding. We believe this spiritual understanding is enhanced through reflective prayer and meditation. The five basic ideas that make up the Unity belief system are: 1) God is the source and creator of all. There is no other enduring power. God is good and present everywhere. 2) We are spiritual beings, created in God’s image. The spirit of God lives within each person; therefore, all people are inherently good. 3) We create our life experiences through our way of thinking. 4) There is power in affirmative prayer, which we believe increases our connection to God. 5) Knowledge of these spiritual principles is not enough. We must live them.”

Regarding a version of what I identify as being similar to pantheism (I could always be wrong about this since I am not a trained theologian):

“Deuteronomy 6:4

Passage:

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord” (Deuteronomy 6:4 RSV).

Question:

I am trying to understand Oneness—what exactly it means and what it doesn’t mean.

Comment:

Oneness is an awesome thing to try to understand! Like the very concept of God, Oneness is greater than any attempt to define it. This is the first statement in the passage known to Jews as the Shema, the cornerstone of their faith and their relationship to the Divine. Deuteronomy is constructed as three final statements from Moses to the people he had led through the wilderness. At that time—and for many centuries after—the Israelites were involved with people and tribes who believed in a number of different gods, with different responsibilities and areas of concern. This is a huge statement of distinction from all other beliefs around them. One God, and one only. The characteristics of that God are omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence. So not only is their God one God, their God is truly all that is—the infinite, eternal Allness that includes everything. Today we understand that there can, by very definition, be no separation from that divine Allness. Jesus, among others, taught that worshipping God as a distant Source is not enough. We must recognize God everywhere around us, and within us, and acting as us. There is nothing that is not a part of the divine Allness.

Blessings!

When “I” read the portions of scripture that say something like “We are within God, and God is within us”, this is how I interpret it.  This idea comes as a result of many years of meditating on its meaning (don’t think I sat there for years just thinking about that one piece, I also had a life to live).  I believe that God is composed of the entire Universe, every tiny particle of it is a particle of God.  Plus, God is ALSO everything that is NOT a part of the physical Universe (pantheism++).  God is existence itself.  There is nothing but God; absolutely nothing but God; it is impossible for anything to exist outside of God.

The feeling or impression that somehow we are separate from God is nothing more than an illusion, it is not real, it is a false belief, a delusion.  The impression that we have a separate personality is an illusion. Our personality is one of the myriad personalities of God, and the ultimate “purpose” is to consciously reunite each and every piece with the “Source” so there is no longer any illusion that we are somehow separate beings (to achieve the perfection of UNITY).  We are tiny pieces of God, always connected to the Whole.  Every thought we think is a God thought, and every particle of our being is a God particle.  God is the doer of every deed that is done, the speaker of every word which is said.  This concept of illusion (or magic) is somewhat along the lines of “Maya” of the Hindu Upanishads, and also of Buddhism also, but both are not exactly the same.

I believe this whole idea of “One God, and Only God” is very similar if not identical to pantheism (pantheism++).  Whew!!!  That was a lot to take in!  And that is just ONE of many beliefs.

What all this is leading up to is this:  if MY theology is very close to that of Unity, which identifies as Christian, then maybe I can continue to identify as Christian too!  Studying the ancient esoteric wisdom of Israel is not incompatible with all forms of Christianity, but does provide a different vantage point from which to interpret all of the scriptures.  This wisdom can be equally applied to the scriptures of any major religion, not just Christianity.  This knowledge has led me to focus on all the similarities between religions and eliminate many of the differences as I realize we are all worshipping the very SAME deity, the One, and Only True God, the perfect Unity (the God, not the church).

So that is the thought I will leave you with today.  Please comment and let me know what you think about this post.  As always, thank you for reading!

Heresy and Modern Spirituality

It’s Sunday, a good day for a religious, or spiritual, discussion.

I just happened to be reading a web page entitled:

“What are Sabellianism, Modalism, and Monarchianism?”

at:

http://www.gotquestions.org/Sabellianism-Modalism-Monarchianism.html

If you have a theological or philosophical streak in your personality, you might find this short discussion very interesting (at least I hope SOMEONE does). Now just what does all this have to do with Modern Spirituality? Well, I’ll get to that in a minute (or so, depending on how fast you read). What I am calling “Modern Spirituality” is an emerging tendency of many people today to describe themselves as “spiritual, but not religious”, distancing themselves from organized religions. More on that shortly.

My own personal understanding of the Trinity, from a Christian upbringing and perspective, was that a.) There is only ONE God, and b.) that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were three ways in which the One God expressed different aspects, modes, or roles of Itself, but that the three were intimately a part of the One Whole. That was about as good an understanding of the Trinity as I gained through discussions with various pastors of liberal denominations of Christian churches throughout the years. These denominations all considered themselves to be part of “Orthodox Christianity”.  Now, I always considered that this view of mine matched up pretty well with what I read in the Bible, and I thought I had a pretty good handle on it. Guess I was wrong.

In comparing this (maybe somewhat naive) view with the discussion on the web page, my understanding seems to most closely match with the description of the Modalistic Monarchianism / Modalism / Sabellianism / Patripassianism view, which is considered HERESY. Hmmm, I always thought I was a little heretical – guess I was right. According to this web page discussion, my problem is that I need to see the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as three SEPARATE personalities, which taken together, comprise the One God, rather than being three different expressions/modes/roles of the One God. Hmmm, now hold on a minute here… Now maybe my mind just isn’t keen enough, but I really do not see much of any difference or fine distinction between the Orthodox Christian view, and my own. It seems to me to be more of a semantic difference in language, rather than an actual difference in the CONCEPT of the Trinity. Now obviously I am in error, since the “Church” (as in Christian Orthodoxy) says it is heresy, which makes me a heretic. Well, OK, I knew that already.

It is terribly ironic to me that this web page emphasizes the fact that this view of God as Three, is way beyond the ability of the human mind to really comprehend. Yet, the “Church” regularly used such precise and nebulous differences, as the excuse to torture human beings to death. Now, is it just me, or do any of you see something very wrong here?

Honestly, sometimes I think that the “Church” political leaders had a little bit too much to drink, too much love of torturing heretics to death, and therefore, too much motivation to invent new heresies. What motivation, you ask? Why, the motivation to find new souls to torture and burn at the stake, of course. I really think they enjoyed this torture/burning/killing thing WAY too much in the “Middle Ages”, and maybe still today. I really think they perfected God’s ability of “ex nihilo” creation a bit too much for the good of humanity (in other words, making a mountain out of a mole hill).

But what do all my opinions and ramblings have to do with “Modern Spirituality”?  I do not pretend to represent Modern Spirituality for all, but rather only MY take on what I think is happening with a large number of people these days.  I think the tendency of my own mind is to see “commonalities” between the various religious beliefs, rather than focusing on the differences. One of the defining aspects of this Spirituality, for me, is the recognition of the commonalities between ALL, or almost all, of the Earth’s major religions, and many of the minor ones. I look at a Buddhist, a Hindu, a Christian, a New Ager…and see that all of us are basically worshiping the exact same God (by various names), and have similar legends or myths, such as the Garden of Eden, Tree of Life, and the many flood myths. If you really look closely, you can see that the commonalities are MUCH more extensive than generally admitted. This tendency I see in Modern Spirituality, to be all-inclusive, and accepting of all human beings as equally valuable, equally Divine, is a major departure from the norm of religions to separate humans, and look down on those who believe differently. I think one major goal of Modern Spirituality is leading people “toward” the brother/sisterhood of all humanity; bringing together, rather than tearing apart. I believe this sentiment is shared by many in this opening Aquarian Age.

In most religions, including Pagan, you can find some sort of trinitarian view of the Godhead. It may be expressed as Father, Mother, and Son/Daughter/Child, or Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas, or some other variation of three-in-one concepts.  The idea is very prevalent as found in all sorts of religions throughout the past, and throughout the Earth.

I hope to have much more to say about both, Modern Spirituality, and the similarities between religions, in future blogs. For now, this is just what “popped” into my little brain today. Please leave me comments, as I want to encourage discussion. I also hope to avoid arguments as much as possible. I value other views, even if I disagree with them. For now, Peace!
